Starting Summer 2021, The Equity Consortium offers investigative services on behalf of those harmed by discrimination, harassment, and/or retaliation. The total length of process is no more than 2 months.

Description
The Equity Adjudicator is tasked with representing the practice of Equity within any situation brought to them by any Person. The role of the Equity Adjudicator is to confirm or deny the presence of unresolved harm caused by discrimination, harassment, and/or retaliation. To do so, the Equity Adjudicator applies intuition and rationality in balance to:
  • Perform an intake interview with requesting Person;
  • Interview Person’s witnesses (no more than four) and organization’s representative (one); 
  • Write an anonymized Peer Review Case Study based on the facts of the case and submit to The Equity Consortium for distribution;
  • Analyze and summarize the Peer Review Case Study results;
  • Research and list all known funders and partners of organization in question;
  • Prepare a detailed Investigative Report using the form provided by The Equity Consortium; and 
  • Not feel obligated to work alone; peer support is available via The Equity Consortium network at any time.

Orientations are offered on an as needed basis by emailing julia@TheEquityConsortium.com. It is expected that an Evaluator already be familiar with elements of institutional and systemic racism, sexism, ableism and the intersections within. Orientation therefore shall focus mainly on 1) Introducing the Equity Factors Assessment process, 2) The online platform to access a personal account, and 3) The easy navigation of The Equity Consortium’s support network.

Eligibility Requirements 
  • Have personally experienced harm as a result of discrimination, harassment, and/or retaliation; 
  • Demonstrated understanding of connection between personal experience and systems via history of equity work. No minimum years of experience required (minimum five years is recommended), but rather “demonstrated understanding” is illustrated in ability to objectively and subjectively share learning from past projects and organizing;
  • Completion of low-cost orientation; 
  • Attend two Monthly Listening Circles; and
  • A compassionate review from your peers (Auditor selects four, Consortium selects three).​​

We keep it simple.  
Over 500 years of combined experience informed The Equity Consortium of the important role of time: what is lost in the name of efficiency? Too often time is weaponized against us and we are left with feelings of being rushed and not heard. We balance that experience with the urgency to reach resolution. We honor the need for compassionate efficiency by keeping it simple: The Adjudicator is tasked with simply confirming or denying the presence of unresolved harm. The organization then opts to simply accept it as truth or not. In consideration of the role of time, The Equity Consortium designed a deeply thoughtful process that takes no longer than two months. That's equity.
We adjust basic assumptions of innocence.
In the criminal system, the accused are presumed innocent for reasons of protecting the innocent. In crimes involving emotional, intangible acts such as discrimination, harassment, and/or retaliation, this same principle of presumed innocence is also applied. Therefore racists, sexists, ableists, harassers are also presumed innocent. But unlike the criminal system, victims of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation too often lack the resources alone to build the evidence necessary to pursue case strong enough to meet the extremely high legal bar. ​The Equity Consortium instead responds to reality: By default, we accept the experience of the person as fact and organizations are assumed responsible. It is then the duty of the organization to prove it has not caused harm. That's equity. 
We rely on the collective wisdom of community.
In a responsible way, the Equity Adjudicator interviews an organizational representative and up to four witnesses you provide. The Adjudicator then presents the facts of your situation in an anonymized Peer Review Case Study along with a set of technical and narrative questions. You become "Person", and your organization becomes "The Organization". In this way, the Adjudicator protects your identity while still obtaining needed perspective alongside their own intuition and rational interpretation. The Equity Consortium requires a minimum of a combined 50 years of experience from those reviewing your situation. That's equity.
We speak money and power. 
As a part of the final Investigative Report, the Adjudicator includes a key section: A list of known funders and partners. Should the organization chose to not accept the your truth, opinions of those included in the Peer Review, or the Adjudicator, The Equity Consortium is then prepared to share the Peer Review Case Study with funders and partners listed in the Investigative Report. At this point, it is your decision to reveal the name of the organization or not. You are always in control of the level of any public involvement. That's equity.
We prioritize amicable resolution.
Because the Equity Adjudicator represents Equity with a capital "E", the ultimate objective remains the amicable and healthy resolution. Resolution leads to healing but to fully heal, the Equity Evaluator also presents in the Investigative Report a set of Settlement Recommendations. To maintain the integrity and the trust of community, the results of the Investigative Report may or may not recommend everything you do, but rest assured it is the voice of compassionate and thoughtful community members who value you and your protection. 

As an option, the organization may accept the Report as truth (lower case "t"). While not an outright admission of liability or guilt, the organization commits to ongoing work around their equitable practices, including resolution. The Equity Consortium then invites the organization to participate in the Equity Factors Assessment, in furtherance of community-facing efforts to institutionalize equity. Should The Equity Consortium be able to assist you, we will then invite you to complete a more detailed intake form. The fee for this service is a total $500 of which the $50 is applied, payable in two monthly payments of $225. [The actual cost to The Equity Consortium  is $2,000, therefore no additional discounts are available.] It is standard procedure for the Equity Adjudicator to include reimbursement from the organization to you for costs incurred.
